The Japanese army has held a major military parade attended by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. More than 50 aircraft along with 3,900 soldiers took part in the ceremony at Asaka training camp in suburban Tokyo.

The Japanese Prime Minister addressed the troops and thousands of spectators at the event, saying the country’s security situation is increasingly critical due to threats to its sovereignty.

The military parade is held every year, but this year it comes amid growing tensions over various territorial disputes.

On Friday, Japan protested to South Korea for holding a military exercise on disputed Dokdo islands in the Sea of Japan, which are claimed by Tokyo but controlled by Seoul.

Japan is also in a dispute with Beijing over China’s Diaoyu Islands. Earlier, China’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said the Diaoyu Islands are an inherent part of Chinese territory. He also urged Japan to respect historical facts, and to stop making statements or taking actions that will damage regional stability.
