МOSCOW, October 30 (Itar-Tass) - Russia calls on the United States again to heed the opinion of the UN General Assembly that declared for practical steps to lift the blockade of Cuba, the Russian Foreign Ministry stated on Wednesday.
“The voting [in the General Assembly] attests to the unprecedented support for the efforts towards lifting the United States’ unilateral sanctions imposed bypassing the United Nations, the sanctions that cause much damage to Cuba’s economy and infringe the rights and lawful interests of Cuban citizens,” the ministry notes.
“Russia, just as in similar situations in the past, supported the draft resolution, being guided by the principled stand on the matter, based on the provisions of the United Nations Charter that any discriminatory measures or interference in internal affairs of states are impermissible,” the ministry stresses.
“We urge the United States once again to heed the firmly expressed opinion of the international community and to take practical steps to lift the blockade of Cuba,” the ministry noted.
On October 29, the UN General Assembly at the plenary meeting passed another resolution on the need to stop the US economic, trade and financial blockade of Cuba. The overwhelming majority of the UN members, 188, voted for the resolution, the US and Israel voted against, and the Marshall Islands, Micronesia and Palau abstained.
