Speaking at the closing ceremony of First Latin American Muslim leaders summit in Istanbul on Nov. 15, Erdoğan slammed colonialism before referring to a controversial claim about the discovery of the Americas.
"Muslim sailors had arrived in the shores of America in 1178. ReplyDeleteLe président islamo-conservateur turc Recep Tayyip Erdogan a affirmé samedi, très sûr de lui, que le continent américain avait été découvert par des musulmans dès le XIIe siècle, et non pas par le navigateur génois Christophe Colomb plus de deux siècles plus tard.
"Les contacts entre l'Amérique latine et l'islam remontent au XIIe siècle. Les musulmans ont découvert l'Amérique en 1178, pas Christophe Colomb", a assuré M. Erdogan lors d'un discours télévisé à Istanbul prononcé à l'occasion d'un sommet des chefs musulmans des pays d'Amérique latine organisé par les autorités turques. "Des marins musulmans sont arrivés en Amérique dès 1178. Colomb mentionne l'existence d'une mosquée sur une colline le long de la côte cubaine", a-t-il insisté. Sur sa lancée, M. Erdogan s'est même dit prêt à participer à la construction d'une mosquée à l'endroit cité par le marin génois. "Je voudrais bien en parler à mes frères cubains, une mosquée irait parfaitement bien sur cette colline aujourd'hui aussi", a poursuivi le chef de l'Etat turc. Les livres d'histoire enseignent que c'est le marin génois Christophe Colomb qui a, en 1492, posé le premier pied étranger sur le continent américain alors qu'il cherchait avec sa flottille une nouvelle voie maritime pour rallier l'Inde. Des historiens ou théologiens musulmans, ultraminoritaires, ont récemment remis en cause sa découverte, suggérant une présence musulmane antérieure en Amérique, bien qu'aucun vestige d'inspiration islamique n'y ait jamais été découvert. Dans un article très controversé publié en 1996, l'historien Youssef Mroueh avait mentionné un passage des récits de Colomb dans lequel il fait référence à une mosquée à Cuba. ReplyDeletePresident Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has instructed Turkey’s educational institutions to adopt a policy of highlighting the contribution of Islam to global science and arts, including the discovery of the American continent by Muslim sailors some 300 years before Columbus.
“I have to be clear that there is an important responsibility falling on the shoulders of our Education Ministry and YÖK [the Higher Education Board]. An objective writing of history will show the contribution of the East, the Middle East and Islam to the science and arts. As the president of my country, I cannot accept that our civilization is inferior to other civilizations,” Erdoğan said in his address to students at the opening of a religious school in Ankara on Nov. 18.

Muslims discovered Earth is round, Turkey's Science Minister says ...
ReplyDeleteTurkey's Science, Industry and Technology Minister has said the fact that the Earth is a sphere was first discovered by a group of Muslim scientists.
Speaking at a reception for businessmen in the central Anatolian province of Konya late Nov 28, Minister Fikri Işık stressed the contributions of the Islamic world to science throughout history. "Some 700-800 years before Galileo, 71 Muslim scientists led by al-Khwarizmi convened by the order of the Caliph Al-Ma'mun and revealed that the Earth is a sphere," he said.
