A Palestinian draft resolution calling for Israel to withdraw from Palestinian territories by late 2017 has been defeated in the UN Security Council after failing to get sufficient votes in favour.
Even if the draft had received the minimum nine votes in favour, it would have been defeated by the vote against it by the United States, one of the five veto-wielding permanent members.
There were eight votes in favour, two votes against and five abstentions.
France, China and Russia were among the countries that supported the text setting a 12-month deadline for negotiations on a final peace deal with Israel.
Australia joined the US in voting against the measure.[rte.ie]
