Greek prime minister Antonis Samaras has described his main political rival as "an accident that must not happen" to the embattled country.Samaras, in a speech in the northwestern city of Ioannina, attacked the left-wing SYRIZA party, saying Greece is "very near to the best and very near to the worst."
"What planet does SYRIZA live on? Doesn't it see what's happening in the rest of the world?" Samaras said.
Recent reports say a Greek exit from the euro currency is inevitable if economic bailout terms not respected; SYRIZA is planning to stop bailout payments if they win an upcoming general election.
“You cannot ask Europe for money and not follow its practices," Samaras said
The Greek premier added that if SYRIZA wins, it will stop working with the so-called troika of the European Commission, the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund as well as Germany.
Alexis Tsipras, leader of SYRIZA, has promised to form an anti-bailout government aimed at ending conditional aid given to Greece by the troika.
"Party officials have informed us that their main weapon is suspension of payments: in other words, bankruptcy – a great negotiating tactic! Another announced Greece's immediate exit from NATO and a third one asked for a referendum," Samaras said.
Opinion polls show that SYRIZA will be the most likely winner of upcoming elections on Jan. 25.

ReplyDeleteLa Grèce peut et doit rester au sein de l'UE et de la zone euro, et le futur gouvernement qui sera formé suite aux législatives du 25 janvier devra honorer les engagements du pays en matière de remboursement de ses dettes, a estimé mardi Fótis Kouvélis, leader de la Gauche démocrate (DIMAR).
"En été 2012, nous avons soutenu le gouvernement parce que le pays avait besoin de stabilité face à la menace de sortie de la zone euro (…) La Grèce peut et doit y rester. Il faut toutefois de nouvelles négociations avec les Européens sur la dette publique du pays qui dépasse d'ores et déjà 320 milliards d'euros.
