Jordan has executed two convicted prisoners, including a female jihadist, in response to the killing of one its pilots

Jordan has executed by hanging two convicted prisoners, including a female jihadist, in response to the killing of one its air-force pilots by the group calling itself Islamic State.

It had demanded the release of the Iraqi failed woman suicide bomber Sajida al-Rishawi.
The other prisoner executed was a senior al-Qaeda prisoner, Ziad al-Karbouli, who had been sentenced to death for plotting to attack targets in Jordan.
  • The Jordanian government had vowed a "strong, earth-shaking and decisive" response to avenge the killing of Moaz al-Kasasbeh, after a video was posted online purporting to show him being burned alive.
He was captured in December when his plane came down in Syria during a mission against IS.

Jordanian state television said that he had been killed a month ago, on 3 January.

The White House said the intelligence community was studying when the video was recorded and that President Barack Obama had ordered his team to devote all resources to locate other hostages held by Islamic State.

  1. Syria urged Jordan to work with it to fight Islamic State and al-Qaida's Syria wing, condemning what it described as the "heinous" killing of a Jordanian pilot by militants, Syria's state news agency SANA said on Wednesday...

The Syrian foreign ministry called on Jordan, which is part of a US-led aerial campaign against Islamic State, "to cooperate in the fight against terrorism represented by the organization Daesh and Nusra Front ... and other terrorist organizations associated with them in Syria and the region."

Daesh is a pejorative Arabic acronym for Islamic State and Nusra Front is al-Qaida's Syria wing. Both have seized land in Syria. The United States has said Syrian President Bashar Assad cannot be a partner in the fight against Islamic State.
