Turkey said Sunday it was "deeply sorry and disappointed" that Francis had used the word “genocide” earlier in the day when marking the centenary of the slaughter of Armenians under the Ottoman Empire.
Turkey's Foreign Ministry said it had recalled its ambassador to the Vatican "for consultations", adding that the pope's comments were "null and void" to the Turkish people.
Francis, who has close ties to the Armenian community from his days in Argentina, said Sunday morning that it was his duty to honor the memory of the innocent men, women, children, priests and bishops who were “senselessly” murdered.
“Concealing or denying evil is like allowing a wound to keep bleeding without bandaging it,” he said at the start of a Mass in the Armenian Catholic rite in St. Peter’s Basilica honoring the centenary.
The pontiff, who has disregarded many aspects of protocol since becoming pope two years ago, uttered a similar phrase during a private meeting at the Vatican with an Armenian delegation in 2013, prompting a strong protest from Ankara.
As archbishop of Buenos Aires, Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio had already publicly described the killings as genocide before he was elected leader of the world's 1.2 billion Catholics in 2013.............france24.com

ReplyDeleteLes Turcs voient rouge. Le ministre des Affaires étrangères Mevlut Cavusoglu a jugé dimanche 12 avril "loin de la réalité historique" l'utilisation par le pape François du mot "génocide" pour qualifier le massacre des Arméniens il y a 100 ans.

ReplyDeleteTurkey’s ambassador to the Vatican, Mehmet Paçacı returned to Ankara late April 12, after Ankara’s strong reaction against Pope Francis’ description of the mass killings of Armenians at the hands of the Ottoman Empire as genocide.
“The steps that will be taken [against the Vatican] will be made public following our consultations,” Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu told reporters on April 13 at a press conference in Mongolia.
“In the past century our human family has lived through three massive and unprecedented tragedies,” the Pope said April 12 during at a 100th anniversary Mass with the participation of Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan. “The first, which is widely considered ‘the first genocide of the 20th century,’ struck your own Armenian people.”
Çavuşoğlu criticized Pope Francis for making discrimination between the pains of all people in 1915 and for ignoring the sufferings of Muslims and Turks in Anatolia.
“Unfortunately, history was made an instrument of politics. Before anything else, a religious man should have given a message of brotherhood, peace and tolerance in the face of recently growing racism, discrimination, xenophobia and intolerance,” he said.
