Hungary has closed its border with Croatia as migrants from the Middle East and Africa continued to flood the country trying to get to western Europe.
"The Hungarian-Croatian green border has been closed on Friday midnight and the same border control method has been introduced there as at the Hungarian-Serbian border," Hungarian government spokesman Zoltan Kovacs said as cited in a Saturday statement on the official website of the Hungarian Prime Minister’s office.
According to the statement, two transit zones have been established, where migrants entering the country can be registered.
"Mr. Kovács underlined the fact that it remains possible to enter the country legally through the Hungarian-Croatian border as well," the statement on the Hungarian government website said.
Over 700,000 migrants arrived in the European Union within the first nine months of 2015, according to EU border protection agency Frontex. The migrants are leaving their conflict-torn countries in Africa and the Middle East, such as Syria, in search of better life conditions in wealthy EU countries, such as Germany and Austria.
Hungary has been a major transit country for the refugees. Las month, Hungary closed its border with Serbia in an effort to curb the influx of refugees.
In September, the European Commission announced a quota scheme, providing for the resettlement of 160,000 refugees currently located in Greece, Italy and Hungary, throughout other European countries.

Hungary seeks to ‘protect EU from Muslim migrants’ ...
ReplyDeleteHungary declared its southern border with Croatia closed to migrants on Friday, diverting them into tiny Slovenia in a measure of Europe's disjointed response to the flow of people reaching its shores in flight from war and poverty.
With autumn winds and rain whipping the Balkans, a last train drew up at the border, and some 2,000 migrants disembarked for the short, muddy walk past razor wire into Hungary as a midnight cut-off point expired.
Hungary has erected a steel fence almost the length of its southern frontier, declaring it is duty-bound to secure the borders of the European Union from mainly Muslim migrants threatening, it says, the prosperity, security and "Christian values" of Europe.
A month ago, the right-wing government of Hungary’s fiercely anti-immigration prime minister, Viktor Orban, shut down the migrant route across its frontier with Serbia, slamming the door on hundreds of thousands of Middle Eastern, African and Asian migrants, many of them refugees from war in Syria, streaming across the Balkan peninsula.
They were diverted into Croatia, from where they entered Hungary, crossing in recent weeks at a rate of 5,000 to 8,000 per day en route to Austria and Germany, the preferred destinations of most.
With that route now sealed, too, Croatia said it had a plan in place to send them to Slovenia from midnight, in agreement with its fellow former Yugoslav republic.....Reuters........alarabiya.net
Croatia diverts migrants to Slovenia after Hungary border closure...
ReplyDeleteA first bus full of migrants arrived at a Slovenian border crossing with Croatia on Saturday, the Slovenian police said, after Hungary shut its border with Croatia late on Friday, diverting them toward Slovenia.
Hungary's action to close its southern border is indicative of Europe’s disjointed response to the flow of people fleeing war and poverty.
Slovenian police said the bus had arrived at a border crossing from Croatia and that the passengers would be registered.
But Slovenia has canceled all rail traffic with fellow European Union member and former Yugoslav republic Croatia, potentially slowing the movement of people just as autumn winds and rain are sweeping through the Balkans.
Forty-three buses packed with migrants, many of them refugees from the war in Syria, were stacked up at Serbia’s western border with Croatia in the village of Berkasovo, a Reuters reporter said. Croatia had only allowed five buses to enter in the morning and some had been queuing through the night................reuters.com
