Turkish jets on Saturday launched bombing raids against Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) targets in Syria, the day before Turks are due to vote in a parliamentary election, a senior government official said...
ReplyDeleteAmerican jets were standing by to assist and all aircraft involved in the operations returned safely, the official told Reuters. Ground forces were not involved.
Turkey vowed to take a more active role in combating ISIL in July, as part of a multi-pronged offensive which also saw them ramp up attacks on Kurdish militants.
Since then, the Turkish military has primarily concentrated on hitting its old foe, the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), although Turkish airbases have also been used by US-led coalition jets to hit ISIL targets in northern Syria.
ISIL militants control swathes of territory along the Turkish border, and the group is linked to a recent suicide bomb attack on a peace rally in Ankara, which killed more than 100 people.
The bombing raids come at a sensitive time for the Turkish government, as it attempts to act decisively after criticism for failing to prevent the Ankara attack, the worst of its type in the country's history.
At the same time, most Turks hold deep misgivings about any deeper involvement in the Syria conflict, and the opposition has strongly criticized President Tayyip Erdogan's foreign policy in the run-up to Sunday's parliamentary polls.

UN and Red Cross scold world leaders over 'conflict paralysis'...
ReplyDeleteThe heads of the UN and Red Cross have issued a rare joint rebuke to world leaders, accusing them of "disturbing paralysis" in the face of conflict.
"This flouts the very raison d'etre of the UN," its chief, Ban Ki-moon, said.
International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) President Peter Maurer said the world had rarely witnessed so much suffering and instability.
They urged immediate concrete steps to ease the plight of civilians in places like Afghanistan, Nigeria and Syria.
It is the first time the two bodies have issued a joint warning, says the BBC's Imogen Foulkes in Geneva, in a sign of desperation over the spread of conflicts across the world.
'Defying basic humanity'
"Rarely before have we witnessed so many people on the move," Mr Maurer told reporters at a joint news conference with Mr Ban in Geneva on Saturday.
He said some 60 million people globally had been displaced from their homes because of conflict and violence - "the highest figure since World War Two"...........http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-34690546

Greek parliament approves bank recapitalization bill ...
ReplyDeleteGreek legislators approved on Saturday with a wide majority a bank recapitalization bill that paves the way to address the key issue for the stability and growth of the ailing economy.
The move came only a few hours after the European Central Bank (ECB) announced that the results of the stress test for Greece's four largest banks revealed a 14.4 billion euro (15.85 billion U.S. dollars) shortfall.
Despite diverging views on some issues, all pro-euro parties represented in the 300-member assembly who jointly control 269 seats agreed on the necessity of proceeding with the third bank recapitalization since the start of the crisis in late 2009, and voted in favor of the draft bill.
They considered the bank recapitalization as a crucial first step to restart the Greek economy.
Only the ultra- Right Golden Dawn and the Communist party voted against the bill.
The bill sets the framework for the procedure of the recapitalization that should be concluded by year end to avoid a bail in on deposits of over 100,000 euros according to the new European laws that come into force on Jan. 1.
Briefly the bill foresees that Greek banks should use common or preferred shares and other tools to strengthen their capitals and be in a better position to face crises in the future...........http://www.china.org.cn/world/2015-11/01/content_36947049.htm

Islamic State advances in Homs Province...
ReplyDeleteIslamic State (IS) fighters have reportedly captured the Syrian town of Maheen, in central Homs Province, from government forces.
They launched the offensive with two suicide car blasts late on Saturday, the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says.
Clashes were also taking place in nearby Sadad, a mostly-Christian town.
The latest development comes amid air campaigns in Syria by Russia and a US-led coalition.
Islamic State has been expanding from its mainly northern and eastern strongholds towards Homs in central Syria in recent months. The group overran the town of Tadmur - home to the ancient ruins of Palmyra - in May, and later took al-Qaryatain town in August.
The latest offensive on Maheen and Sadad brings IS to within 20km (13 miles) of the main road that links the Syrian capital Damascus to Homs and other cities further north.

The Observatory said at least 50 government soldiers were killed or wounded in the fighting. The attack on Maheen began late on Saturday with twin suicide car bombs, a favoured tactic for IS militants launching an assault............http://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-34693670

China, S. Korea, Japan agree to properly handle historical issues ...
ReplyDeleteVisiting Chinese Premier Li Keqiang said Sunday that China, South Korea and Japan agreed to properly handle historical and sensitive issues lingering among the three neighbors.
Li made the remarks at a joint press conference with South Korean President Park Geun-hye and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe after the first China-Japan-South Korea leaders' meeting following a three-and-a-half-year hiatus.
China, South Korea and Japan should stick to the policy of facing up to history and looking forward to the future, so as to better develop trilateral cooperation and bilateral ties, he said.
He voiced his hope that the trilateral cooperation will be free from disturbances.
The trilateral summit, which came into being in 2008, was suspended in 2012 due to Japan's policy of historical revisionism over its wartime past and such right-leaning politics, therefore, prompted anger from China and South Korea, both of them suffered the most under Japan's wartime barbarities.
Li called on the three countries to make commitment to the world in the 70th anniversary of the victory of the anti-fascist war to firmly advance trilateral cooperation, so as to contribute to regional peace and stability.................http://www.globaltimes.cn/content/950166.shtml

After a century of searching, archaeologists said they have found the remnants of an ancient Greek fortress once a center of power in Jerusalem and a stronghold used to hold off a Jewish rebellion celebrated in the scriptural Book of the Maccabees...
ReplyDeleteResearchers have long debated over the location of the Acra, built more than 2,000 years ago by Antiochus Epiphanes, king of the Hellenistic Seleucid empire.
Many asserted it stood in what is now Jerusalem's walled Old City, at spots like the Church of the Holy Sepulchre or by the hilltop where two Jewish temples once towered and which now houses the al-Aqsa mosque compound.

But the remains unearthed by the Israel Antiquities Authority and made public on Tuesday are outside the walls, overlooking a valley to the south, an area where archaeologists say Jerusalem construction was concentrated under the biblical King David.
Antiochus, who lived from 215-164 BC, chose the spot for the Acra in order to control the city and monitor activity in the Jewish temple, said Doron Ben-Ami, who led the excavation.

Russian arms exporter praises Syria for timely payments for arms supplies...
ReplyDeleteSyria and almost all Middle East countries receiving Russian armaments pay for arms supplies in full and on time, state weapons exporter Rosoboronexport CEO Anatoly Isaikin said on Thursday.

"But almost all the countries, including Syria and other states in that unstable region, are paying the full cost within the time limits stipulated in the contracts," he added.
The Rosoboronexport head said he agreed with the statement that Russia’s military operation in Syria "is good testimony for Russian armaments."

"This is now a global responsibility, but it is a particular European responsibility," he said.

Kurdish militants ended a month-old ceasefire in Turkey on Thursday, a day after President Tayyip Erdogan vowed to “liquidate” them, dashing hopes of any let-up in violence in the wake of a national election...
ReplyDeleteThe Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) militant group said the ruling AK Party, which won back its parliamentary majority in Sunday’s election, was on a war footing.
“The unilateral halt to hostilities has come to an end with the AKP’s war policy and the latest attacks,” it said in a statement carried by the Firat news agency, which is close to the militant group.
Erdogan, who oversaw a peace process with the PKK which collapsed in July, vowed on Wednesday to continue battling the PKK until every last fighter was “liquidated”.
Eighteen people were killed in clashes with the military in the mainly Kurdish southeast on Thursday, bringing this week’s death toll to almost 40. More than 40,000 people have been killed in the insurgency since it began in 1984.
The PKK - designated a terrorist group by Turkey, the United States and European Union - declared the ceasefire on Oct. 10 as a move to avoid any violence that might prevent a “fair and just election”. The government dismissed it as an electoral tactic.

The rebel Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) said Thursday that it had torn up a unilateral truce in Turkey after a surge in deadly violence since the country's weekend election...
DeleteIts announcement comes after several days of Turkish air raids against the PKK in both southeastern Turkey and across the border in northern Iraq and a spate of deadly clashes.
"The unilateral state of inaction has ended due to the AKP (Justice and Development Party) government's latest attacks," the PKK said in a statement carried by the pro-Kurdish news agency Firat.
"After the election, the AKP has demonstrated it is going to be a war government," said the PKK, considered a terrorist organisation by Ankara and its Western allies.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had vowed on Wednesday that Ankara would press ahead with its military campaign against the rebels in a conflict that has plagued Turkey for more than three decades.

ReplyDeleteFrance will deploy its Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier to support operations against the Islamic State (IS) group in Syria and Iraq, the presidency announced on Thursday.
“The deployment of the battle group alongside the Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier has been decided to participate in operations against Daesch and its affiliate groups,” the statement said, referring to the Arabic acronym for the IS group.
France has been part of the US-led coalition bombarding the IS group in Iraq since September 2014, and expanded its campaign to include Syria two months ago.
The deployment will more than double the country’s military presence in the region, where it already has six Rafale fighter jets based in the United Arab Emirates, as well as six Mirage fighter aircraft in Jordan.

Germany has scaled back its refugee policy for Syrians, the largest group of asylum seekers, including eliminating their right to have their families join them in the country, a newspaper reported Friday...
DeleteAs Europe's top economy prepares for the arrival of around one million asylum seekers this year, Germany has now downgraded the standard of legal protection for Syrians, the daily Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ) reported.
The new measures mean that Syrian refugees will only receive a residence permit for one year and can no longer claim a right of their families to move to Germany.
"The Federal Office for Migration and Refugees has been ordered to only grant secondary protection for refugees from Syria's civil war," the FAZ quoted an interior ministry document as saying.

Turkish aid agency encourages refugees to stay in Syria...
ReplyDeleteTurkey is encouraging displaced civilians to remain in Syria and is supporting aid camps there but it does not intend to shut its borders to those fleeing the civil war, the head of Turkey's disaster management agency said on Friday.
Turkey is under pressure from the European Union, which it aspires to join, to keep refugees on its soil and help stem the biggest migration crisis Europe has faced since World War Two. It has offered financial aid and accelerated membership talks.
But Ankara is already struggling to cope with 2.2 million Syrian refugees. Although it runs what are widely held to be some of the best-equipped refugee camps near the Syrian border, they have capacity for just 330,000 of that total.
"An open-border policy is the main policy we have been following since the beginning of this crisis ... but the entire world including Europe has to open its doors for the refugees, it's not just for Turkey," Fuat Oktay, director of Turkish disaster management agency AFAD, told Reuters............http://www.todayonline.com/world/turkish-aid-agency-encourages-refugees-stay-syria

(Belga)

Egypt says foreign countries did not coordinate with Egypt on security...
ReplyDeleteForeign countries did not heed Egypt's calls for greater coordination to fight terrorism and have not shared intelligence with Cairo about the crash of a Russian passenger plane last week, Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry said on Saturday.

Riot hits Australia's Christmas Island migrant center...
ReplyDeleteA disturbance broke out Monday at Australia's Christmas Island detention center, the immigration department said, amid reports rioters seized control of the facility after the death of an asylum seeker.
The department said it was not aware of injuries on the remote Indian Ocean island, although inmates allegedly set fires and smashed up the center after security guards fled for their lives.
"The department can confirm a disturbance at Christmas Island Immigration Detention Centre," a statement said. "The department and its service providers are working together to resolve the situation."
Officials declined further comment but a detainee told Radio New Zealand (RNZ) rioters had armed themselves with bats and poles to resist any attempt to re-take the facility.
The man said the catalyst was the discovery on Sunday of the body of an Iranian Kurdish asylum seeker, named by Australian media as Fazel Chegeni, after he escaped. It was unclear how Chegeni died.
"We're sick of it. We see it all the time, people trying to hurt themselves, kill themselves," the man, who spoke with a New Zealand accent and did not give his name, told RNZ by telephone.

Indonesia could take China to the International Criminal Court (ICC) if Beijing's claim to the majority of the South China Sea and part of Indonesian territory is not resolved through dialogue, Indonesia's security chief said on Wednesday...
ReplyDeleteBeijing's claim to almost the entire South China Sea is shown on Chinese maps with a nine-dash line that stretches deep into the maritime heart of Southeast Asia, including parts of the Indonesian-held Natuna islands.
Vietnam, the Philippines, Taiwan, Malaysia and Brunei also claim parts of the waterway. The Philippines has already taken China to the ICC in The Hague, a case Beijing refuses to recognise.

The European Union published new guidelines on Wednesday for labeling products made in Israeli settlements, a move Brussels said was technical but Israel branded "discriminatory" and damaging to peace efforts with the Palestinians...
DeleteDrawn up over three years by the European Commission, the guidelines mean Israeli producers must explicitly label farm goods and other products that come from settlements built on land occupied by Israel if they are sold in the European Union.
The decision comes at a time of heightened tension between Israel and the Palestinians, amid a wave of deadly attacks by Palestinians targeting Israelis. The violence, in which 12 Israelis and more than 70 Palestinians have been killed, is in part fueled by the occupation and the growth of settlements.
Israeli officials, briefed that the decision was coming, were quick to denounce it. The foreign ministry said it was a political move designed to pressure Israel over its settlements policy. It summoned the EU ambassador to Israel.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who was in Washington on an official visit, called the decision "hypocritical and a double standard", saying the EU was not taking similar steps in hundreds of territorial conflicts elsewhere in the world.
"The European Union should be ashamed of itself," he said. "We do not accept the fact that Europe is labelling the side being attacked by terrorist acts."
The EU's position is that the lands Israel has occupied since the 1967 Middle East war - including the West Bank, East Jerusalem and the Golan Heights - are not part of the internationally recognized borders of Israel.
As such, goods from there cannot be labelled "Made in Israel" and should be labelled as coming from settlements, which the EU considers illegal under international law.
"It's an indication of origin, not a warning label," the EU ambassador to Israel, Lars Faaborg-Andersen, told Reuters.
Britain, Belgium and Denmark already affix labels to Israeli goods, differentiating between those from Israel proper and those, particularly fruits and vegetables, that come from the Jordan Valley in the occupied West Bank. Now, all 28 EU member states would have to apply the same labelling.
While there is no EU official wording, goods must carry the word "settlement" on the tag when sold in European shops. If an Israeli farmer refuses, a retail outlet can attach the label themselves, as the European Commission has sufficient information about where goods come from.
Israel's foreign ministry said the move singled Israel out and was potentially harmful to long-standing peace efforts.
"We regret that the EU has chosen, for political reasons, to take such an exceptional and discriminatory step, inspired by the boycott movement," it said in a statement.
"Product labeling will strengthen the radical elements advocating a boycott against Israel and denying Israel's right to exist, contradicting positions the EU publicly opposes."
Double standard charge
Two elements have particularly enraged Israeli officials. They see the measures as an effective boycott of Israel - akin to the Palestinian-led Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement that has gained traction in recent years - and say other cases of long-standing occupation, such as Morocco's seizure of Western Sahara, are not treated in the same way.
The EU dismisses the suggestion of a boycott, pointing out that it is not telling consumers what not to buy. Those who do not want to buy Israeli settlement goods probably already avoid them, and those that support the settlements may now more actively seek out settlement produce.
The question of a double-standard is harder for the EU, which has been criticized over Western Sahara in the past. When it comes to goods from northern Cyprus, seized by Turkey in 1974, the EU calls it "an internal issue.".... alarabiya.net by Reuters

Russia would step up efforts in focusing attention on concerns of Christians in the Middle East, Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Wednesday at a meeting with Syrian Orthodox Church’s Patriarch Mor Ignatius Aphrem II...
ReplyDelete"Russia was among the initiators to hold a special event on the sidelines of the human rights council in Geneva this March which was devoted to the Christians’ distress and beginning of their exodus from the region," Lavrov said. "We will stand up for this direction and this position and will promote it in the international organizations."
"The Middle East is a cradle of Christianity," he went on to say. "Christians have been living there for 2,000 years. It should be done so that the civilizational tissue of that region would be preserved and would not be breached."

Immediately after the U.S. killed at least 30 people in a devastating airstrike on a charity hospital, Afghanistan's national security adviser told a European diplomat his country would take responsibility. The Afghans were convinced the hospital was occupied by Taliban...
ReplyDeleteThat's according to notes of the meeting reviewed by The Associated Press. But more than a month later, no evidence has emerged to support the Afghan assertion about the hospital run by Doctors Without Borders. Eyewitnesses tell the AP they saw no gunman at the hospital.
Instead, there are mounting indications that the U.S. military relied heavily on Afghan allies who resented the internationally run hospital. It did treat Afghan security forces and Taliban alike, but says it refused to admit armed men.

Iraq Kurds launch major offensive to retake Sinjar from IS...
ReplyDeleteIraqi Kurdish forces on Thursday launched a major operation against the Islamic State group in the town of Sinjar, which lies on a key supply line for the jihadists, a senior officer said.
"The attack began at 7:00 am (0400 GMT), and the (Kurdish) peshmerga forces advanced on several axes to liberate the center of the Sinjar district," Major General Ezzeddine Saadun told AFP.
Columns of smoke rose over the town from US-led coalition strikes and Kurdish shelling against IS positions in Sinjar, an AFP journalist said.
Sinjar is located on a key IS supply line linking Mosul, its hub in Iraq, with Syria, where it also holds large tracts of territory.
Cutting that link would be a major blow to the jihadists' ability to move fighters and supplies between the two countries.
The autonomous Kurdish region's security council said up to 7,500 of its peshmerga fighters would take part in the operation, which aims to retake Sinjar "and establish a significant buffer zone to protect the (town) and its inhabitants from incoming artillery."...........http://www.i24news.tv/en/news/international/middle-east/92187-151112-iraq-kurds-launch-major-offensive-to-retake-sinjar-from-is

The Kremlin says secret plans for a Russian long-range nuclear torpedo - called "Status-6" - should not have appeared on Russian TV news...
ReplyDeleteThe leak happened during a report on state-run Channel One about President Vladimir Putin meeting military chiefs in the city of Sochi.
One general was seen studying a diagram of the "devastating" torpedo system.
Launched by a submarine, it would create "wide areas of radioactive contamination", the document says.
The "oceanic multi-purpose Status-6 system" is designed to "destroy important economic installations of the enemy in coastal areas and cause guaranteed devastating damage to the country's territory by creating wide areas of radioactive contamination, rendering them unusable for military, economic or other activity for a long time", the document says.
"It's true some secret data got into the shot, therefore it was subsequently deleted," said Mr Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov.
"In future we will undoubtedly take preventive measures so this does not happen again."
However, the Russian government newspaper Rossiiskaya Gazeta reported details of the weapon, without showing the diagram, and speculated about a super-radioactive cobalt device. So the leak may not have been accidental.
Cobalt warhead?
On the diagram the giant torpedo's range is given as "up to 10,000km" (6,200 miles) and depth of trajectory is "up to 1,000m" (3,300ft).

France's fragile economy under siege after Paris attacks...
ReplyDeleteFrance's fragile economic recovery is under threat after the Paris attacks, economists said on Sunday, with tourism and consumer spending likely to come under siege.
"We've been observing a general climate of lethargy since Saturday," said Philippe Waechter, head of economic research at Natixis bank. "There is risk that this generates a wait-and-see attitude, and uncertainty. Uncertainty is never a good thing for the economy."
It's a cruel irony that only hours before the attacks the French government was celebrating the best economic news in months: that France had finally returned to growth in the third quarter.
France had "exited the period of extremely weak growth that had lasted too long", Finance Minister Michel Sapin said about the 0.3 per cent GDP rise in the quarter, predicting "a new phase" for the French economy. But that was before the attacks.
Fears for tourism
Now the fear is that France's money-spinning tourism sector will be the first to feel the pain. "We're worried about the clients who usually come here for the end-of-year festivities," said Evelyne Maes, president of the hotel and restaurant employers' association.
Paris is the world's top tourist destination, and tourism accounts for nearly eight percent of France's gross domestic product, with just under 84 million visitors last year..................http://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/business/international/france-s-fragile-economy/2264198.html

Moscow does not consider Shi'ite Muslim group Hezbollah to be a terrorist organisation, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov was quoted by the Interfax news agency as saying on Sunday...

"Some say Hezbollah is a terrorist organisation. We maintain contacts and relations with them because we do not consider them a terrorist organisation," Bogdanov was quoted as saying on Sunday.
"They have never committed any terrorist acts on Russian territory. Hezbollah was elected by people to the Lebanese parliament. There are cabinet members and ministers who are from Hezbollah in Lebanon. It's a legitimate socio-political force."

Danger of chemical attack - French PM...
ReplyDeleteFrench PM Manuel Valls has warned that France could face chemical or biological attack from terror groups, as MPs debate extending the state of emergency after the Paris attacks.
Belgian police are meanwhile raiding six properties in and around Brussels, linked to suspected Paris attackers Bilal Hadfi and Salah Abdeslam.
It remains unclear whether the suspected organiser of the attacks was killed in Wednesday's raid in Paris.
Friday's attacks killed 129 people.
Mr Valls was addressing the French parliament ahead of a vote to extend the state of emergency by three months.
He told MPs that "terrorism hit France, not because of what it is doing in Iraq and Syria ... but for what it is".
"What is new are the ways of operating; the ways of attacking and killing are evolving all the time," the prime minister said.
"The macabre imagination of those giving the orders is unlimited. Assault rifles, beheadings, suicide bombers, knives or all of these at once."
Mr Valls also called for Europe to adopt measures on sharing information about airline passengers as a way of protecting collective security................http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-34866820

Climate change root cause of Syrian war: Britain's Prince Charles...
ReplyDeleteBritain's Prince Charles has pointed to the world's failure to tackle climate change as a root cause of the civil war in Syria, terrorism and the consequent refugee crisis engulfing Europe.
The heir to the British throne is due to give a keynote speech at the opening of a global climate summit in Paris next week where 118 leaders will gather to try to nail down a deal to limit rising greenhouse gas emissions.
The prince said in an interview with Sky News, to be aired on Monday and recorded before the Nov. 13 attacks in Paris, that such symptoms were a "classic case of not dealing with the problem".
"Some of us were saying 20 something years ago that if we didn't tackle these issues, you would see ever greater conflict over scarce resources and ever greater difficulties over drought, and the accumulating effect of climate change which means that people have to move," he said................Read more at Reuters

Kerry says more cooperation with Russia possible, seeks to reassure opposition...
ReplyDeleteU.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said on Monday it was possible to broaden cooperation with Russia on Syria, but such a move should not deter opposition groups trying to topple Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
Washington has long resisted working more closely with Russia until Moscow shows that its air strikes in Syria are against Islamic State militants and not aimed at insurgent forces fighting Assad.
Kerry met Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed al-Nahayan on Monday and later held talks with Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir on ways to bring Syrian opposition groups together at a conference in Riyadh next month.
Although he said Washington was not under pressure to work more closely with Moscow, such cooperation would be possible under the right circumstances and could lead to "constructive possibilities"...........Read more at Reuters

Hollande to press Obama on co-operation with Russia in fight against Islamic State...
ReplyDeletePresident Barack Obama will stand in solidarity with French President Francois Hollande at the White House on Tuesday, 11 days after the Islamic State group launched a series of deadly attacks in Paris. But Hollande is likely to leave Washington without firm backing for his call to bring Russia into a new coalition to fight the extremists.
Hollande's visit to Washington is part of a diplomatic offensive to get the international community to bolster the campaign against the Islamic State militants. The group is believed to have been behind the Nov. 13 attacks that killed 130 people in Paris, as well as separate attacks in Lebanon and Turkey and the downing of a Russian airliner in Egypt.
As the Islamic State group expands its reach outside its bases in Syria and Iraq, Obama is facing increased pressure at home and abroad to ramp up U.S. efforts to destroy the militants. So far, Obama is resisting calls to either change or significantly ramp up his approach, and instead is focused on getting other countries to offer more counterintelligence, humanitarian and military assistance..........AP........http://www.ctvnews.ca/world/hollande-to-press-obama-on-co-operation-with-russia-in-fight-against-islamic-state-1.2671776

Britain's Cameron says time to bomb militants in Syria...
ReplyDeletePrime Minister David Cameron said on Thursday it was time to join air strikes against Islamic State in Syria because Britain cannot "subcontract its security to other countries".
Many Britons are wary of entering into another war in the Middle East after Western intervention in Iraq, Afghanistan and Libya failed to bring stability to the region and some believe led to the rise of militants groups such as Islamic State.
But after Islamic State claimed responsibility for killing 130 people in Paris, some members of parliament who were reluctant to launch further military action in the Middle East now feel it is needed to protect Britain from such attacks.

Japan to deploy troops near East China Sea islands...
ReplyDeleteJapan is planning to deploy about 500 ground troops on a southern island as territorial disputes with China continue to escalate.
Vice Minister of Defence Kenji Wakamiya was in Ishigaki on Thursday to explain to Mayor Yoshitaka Nakayama a plan to deploy the soldiers on the island beginning in 2019.
Ishigaki has jurisdiction over the Japanese-controlled Senkaku islands, which China also claims and calls the Diaoyu islands.
Japan has stepped up defence readiness with the Chinese military build-up and its aggressive patrols near the disputed islands.
Beijing insists it has sovereign rights to nearly all of the East China Sea and the South China Sea, a strategic waterway through which about one-third of all the world's traded oil passes.
The disputed waters - also claimed in part or in whole by Vietnam, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Brunei - have also become the stage for a tussle for regional dominance between Beijing and Washington, the world's two largest economic and military powers.

Russia's foreign ministry on Thursday slammed as "extraordinarily dangerous" Poland's call to annul a NATO act that prevents it from having permanent military bases on its soil...
ReplyDelete"We consider these statements to be extraordinarily dangerous and exceptionally provocative," Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said.
Poland's new right-wing Foreign Minister Witold Waszczykowski on Wednesday called for scrapping the 1997 act on NATO-Russia relations to let the alliance install the bases, saying the document causes "inequality" between new and old members of the alliance.
Zakharova said that Waszczykowski's statement was part of an attempt to rally Western public opinion ahead of next year's NATO summit in Warsaw and that the annulment of the deal could "bring down the existing European security system."
"We see here the desire to convey the irreversible course taken by the alliance on the military containment of our country," she said in a briefing.
The 1997 document stipulates that older NATO members "have no intention, no plan and no reason to deploy nuclear weapons on the territory of new members" like Poland, Hungary or the Baltic countries.
Russia has long insisted this provision also rules out permanent bases and troop deployments.

France's Fabius backtracks after suggesting working with Syrian army...
ReplyDeleteFrance's foreign minister was forced to backtrack on Friday after suggesting earlier in the day that troops loyal to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad could be used to fight ISIS before a political transition took place in the country.
"The cooperation of all Syrian forces, including the Syrian army, against Daesh (ISIS) is obviously welcomed, but, as I have constantly said, it will only be possible in the framework of a political transition," Laurent Fabius said in a statement.
Fabius, one of Assad's fiercest critics, had told RTL radio earlier on Friday that while troops on the ground to fight ISIS could not be French there could be "Syrian soldiers from the Free Syrian Army, Sunni Arab states, and why not regime troops".
Officials close to Fabius at the time clarified his position saying that cooperation could only happen once a unity government without Assad was in place.
However, his original comments, which would have marked a departure in the Western position that the Syrian leader must step down, spread quickly......REUTERS....ahram.org.eg
Prominent Kurdish lawyer shot dead in Turkey...
ReplyDeleteAn unidentified gunman on Saturday killed a top Kurdish lawyer who had been criticised in Turkey for saying the banned Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) was not a terrorist organisation.
Witnesses said Tahir Elci was shot in the head after making a statement to the media in Diyarbakir, the largest city in Turkey’s troubled, mainly Kurdish southeast where he was president of the local bar association. A policeman was also killed in an ensuing exchange of fire.
Hundreds of people have been killed since a ceasefire between the PKK and Turkish security forces collapsed in July, reigniting a conflict in which some 40,000 people have died since it began in 1984.
“The moment the statement ended, the crowd was sprayed with bullets,” a local official from the pro-Kurdish HDP party, Omer Tastan, told Reuters.
“A single bullet struck Elci in the head,” he said, adding that 11 people had also been injured in the incident.
An HDP statement later described the killing as a “planned assassination” in a written statement, while calling for a protest in Istanbul...............http://www.france24.com/en/20151128-turkey-prominent-kurdish-lawyer-tahir-elci-shot-dead

Turkey to help EU curb migration in exchange for cash, EU membership talks ...
ReplyDeleteTurkey will help the EUropean Union handle the flow of migrants that has called into question the future of Europe's passport-free travel in exchange for cash and restarting stalled talks on EU accession, draft conclusions of an EU-Turkey summit said.
"Both sides will, as agreed and with immediate effect, step up their active cooperation on migrants who are not in need of international protection, preventing travel to Turkey and the EU, ensuring the application of the established bilateral readmission provisions and swiftly returning migrants who are not in need of international protection to their countries of origin," the draft, seen by Reuters, said.
In exchange, Turkey will get 3 billion euros of initial aid to handle the refugees on its territory. The amount might be adjusted later on depending on developments, the draft said.
The EU would also open in December the next chapter of negotiations with Turkey in its accession talks to the EU, which have been dragging on since 2005, and prepare further chapters for discussion in the first three months of next year.
The EU also aims to lift the need for visas for Turks travelling to the EU in October 2016 if Ankara meets certain criteria specified in an agreed roadmap, said the draft, which may still be changed after the talks which start at 15.00 GMT.

A Russian warplane recently entered Israeli-controlled airspace from Syria but the intrusion was resolved without incident, Israeli Defence Minister Moshe Yaalon said on Sunday...
ReplyDeleteYaalon's comments come amid deep concern over the downing of a Russian warplane by Turkey, which claims it strayed over the Syrian border into its airspace and ignored repeated warnings to change course. Moscow denies the allegations.
"There was a slight intrusion a mile (1.6 kilometres) deep by a Russian plane from Syria into our airspace, but it was immediately resolved and the Russian plane returned towards Syria," Yaalon told public radio.
"It was apparently an error by the pilot who was flying near the Golan."
Israel seized most of the Golan Heights from Syria in 1967 and later annexed the territory in a move never recognised by the international community.
Yaalon recalled that Israel and Russia had made arrangements to avoid clashes over Syria, with the agreement said to include a "hotline" and information sharing.........AFP.........ahram.org.eg

Israel's prime minister has suspended contacts with European Union representatives regarding the political process with the Palestinians to protest the bloc's decision to label Israeli exports from the West Bank...
ReplyDeleteIsrael's Foreign Ministry said Sunday that Netanyahu had ordered contacts frozen until a "reassessment process is completed."
It did not go into detail as to which institutions are affected. The peace process with the Palestinians broke down early last year.
Israel also said it would suspend dialogue on certain political issues earlier this month when the EU issued its new directive that labels Israeli produce made in the West Bank. Israel says the labeling is unfair and discriminatory. The EU says it is an accurate depiction of origin since the goods are not made in Israel.

EU slams Syria for gaps in chemical weapons declaration...
ReplyDeleteA European Union envoy criticized Syria Monday for "gaps and contradictions" in its declarations about its chemical weapons arsenal to the global watchdog overseeing the destruction of the toxic armaments.
Jacek Bylica of Luxembourg said that the lack of clarity from Damascus, "make it impossible to have confidence that its chemical weapons program has been irreversibly dismantled."
Bylica delivered the damning statement on behalf of the EU on the opening day of the annual meeting of member states of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons in The Hague.
Syria declared an arsenal of 1,300 tons of chemical weapons when it joined the OPCW in 2013 under pressure from the international community following a deadly chemical attack on a Damascus neighborhood.
More than 99 percent of those weapons have been destroyed, but questions remain about whether Syria declared all of its stockpiles....AFP.......dailystar.com.lb
