Foreigners can legally serve in Ukrainian army from Nov 12

The law allowing foreigners to serve in the Armed Forces of Ukraine came into force on November 12.

Law No. 716-VIII published in the government's Uryadoviy Kurier newspaper on November 11 stipulates that foreigners and stateless persons are provided legal opportunity for contracted service in the Armed Forces of Ukraine and other military formations.

Foreigners joining the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and other military formations will help reduce the need for conscription of Ukrainian citizens during mobilization for a special period.

As UNIAN reported earlier, on October 6, the Verkhovna Rada adopted the Law "On amendments to some legislative acts of Ukraine concerning military service in the Armed Forces of Ukraine by foreigners and stateless persons."

According to the law, foreigners and stateless persons who are accepted for military service in the Armed Forces of Ukraine for the first time will take formal commitment to comply strictly with the Constitution and laws of Ukraine, to conscientiously perform the duties of military service.

On November 3, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko signed the Law "On amendments to some legislative acts of Ukraine concerning military service in the Armed Forces of Ukraine by foreigners and stateless persons."
