Με τον υδράργυρο στους 31 βαθμούς Κελσίου τις τελευταίες έξι ημέρες, οι αρχές της Βρετανίας απευθύνουν έκκληση στους πολίτες και κυρίως στις ευπαθείς ομάδες να μένουν στα σπίτια τους τις μεσημεριανές ώρες και να φροντίζουν τους ηλικιωμένους.
Μάλιστα, οι ειδικοί εκτιμούν ότι εκατοντάδες είναι οι πολίτες που έχουν χάσει τη ζωή τους λόγω των υψηλών θερμοκρασιών των τελευταίων ημερών.
Συγκεκριμένα, σύμφωνα με τη Σχολή του Λονδίνου της υγιεινής και της τροπικής ιατρικής, ο συνολικός αριθμός των θυμάτων του καύσωνα στη Βρετανία κυμαίνεται από 540 έως 760 άτομα.
Αν ο καύσωνας συνεχιστεί και την επόμενη εβδομάδα, προβλέπεται ότι ο αριθμός των νεκρών θα διπλασιαστεί!
Τα παραπάνω στοιχεία δεν έχουν επιβεβαιωθεί επίσημα και πρόκειται για πληροφορίες που προκύπτουν από την ανάλυση δεδομένων, όσον αφορά στα στοιχεία για τη θερμοκρασία στη χώρα και την ανάλυση των στατιστικών των θανάτων από «χτυπήματα» καύσωνα των περασμένων ετών.
Η πλέον ζεστή ημέρα του 2013 για το Ηνωμένο Βασίλειο ήταν η Τετάρτη όταν και η θερμοκρασία να άγγιξε τους 32,2 βαθμούς στο Χάμπτον του Σάρεϊ. Την Πέμπτη η βρετανική Μετεωρολογική Υπηρεσία πρόσθεσε τη νοτιοδυτική Αγγλία και τα Δυτικά Μίντλαντς στις περιοχές με επίπεδο συναγερμού υγείας 3.
Σύμφωνα με το συναγερμό, οι εργαζόμενοι στην υγεία και την κοινωνική πρόνοια καλούνται να δίνουν έμφαση στους ιδιαίτερα νέους, στους ηλικιωμένους και σε όσους πάσχουν από χρόνιες ασθένειες.

Classes should be cancelled if weather gets too hot: UK union leaders...
ReplyDeleteLONDON — Children should be sent home if the temperature in a classroom rises above 26 degrees Celsius, teachers’ leaders say.
The recommendation came as the mercury is expected to hit 35 degrees Celsius next week when many pupils will still be at school, according to the Daily Telegraph.
The teachers claim that youngsters can become lethargic, unable to concentrate and even faint if it gets too hot.
Schools are due to break up for the summer holidays within the next week, but in the meantime many children are coping with “hot and stuffy” classrooms.
Union leaders have called for a maximum legal temperature limit of 78F (26 C) to be introduced, which would allow staff and children to be sent home.
Chris Keates, the general secretary of the NASUWT teaching union, said high temperatures were a “major problem” for schools, which were unable to cope.
She said union research found that teachers and pupils were sweltering in classrooms with inadequate ventilation.
Some classrooms didn’t even have blinds on the windows to provide some shade, she said.
Teachers say conditions have become worse in recent years because so many classrooms now contain computers.
Christine Blower, the general secretary of the union, said high temperatures could affect the ability of teachers and pupils to work effectively.
Many pupils suffered discomfort and illness, she said.
“The NUT will continue to campaign to ensure that 26C is the absolute maximum temperature in which teachers should be expected to work,” she said.
Guidance for teachers from Public Health England says schools could consider starting or finishing lessons early. AGENCIES

UK heatwave: Hottest day for seven years recorded...
ReplyDeleteThe UK is experiencing its hottest day since July 2006 as the heatwave continues, BBC forecasters have said.
A temperature of 33.5C (92.3F) was recorded at Heathrow and Northolt in west London.
The highest UK temperature recorded before Monday was 32.2C at Hampton Waterworks, south-west London, last Wednesday.
The hot weather is expected to give way to thunderstorms and potential flooding on Monday night.
The BBC Weather Centre said delayed reports from smaller weather stations could produce a higher reading than 33.5C.
A spokesman added that it was also possible the record for the highest minimum overnight temperature - Brighton's 23.9C in August 1990 - may be broken.
Before Monday the highest temperatures recorded this year in the UK - but outside England - were 30C at Auchtermuchty, in Fife, last Thursday; 30.1C at Castlederg, in Strabane, on Friday and 31.4C at Porthmadog, in Gwynedd, on Friday.
A high of 36.5C was recorded at Wisley, Surrey on 19 July 2006 - and that month was the warmest on record over much of the UK.
