Greece issues fresh warning on IMF payment in June

A Greek government minister said on May 24 that Athens will be unable to repay the IMF on schedule next month, reiterating previous warnings by officials during tense talks with the country’s creditors.
“The instalment to the IMF won’t be paid,” Interior Minister Nikos Voutsis told Mega TV.

“The instalments for the IMF in June are 1.6 billion euros ($1.8 billion). This money will not be given. There isn’t any to be given. This is a known fact,” he said.

Voutsis added however that the negotiations between Athens and its creditors were taking place “on the basis of cautious optimism that there will be a strong agreement”.

Greece faces four debt repayments to the IMF from June 5. Athens would struggle to meet all of them without using bailout funds due to it that are being blocked by its international creditors.

A failure to honor the repayments could result in default, raising the specter of a possible exit from the euro....

    1- L’ACCORDO IN EXTREMIS

  4. Greece says wants to make debt payments but needs aid urgently ...

Greece intends to make good on its debt obligations but needs aid urgently to be able to do so, the government said on Monday, after several senior officials insisted Athens had no money to pay a loan installment falling due next week.

Shut out of bond markets and with bailout aid locked, Greece is running out of cash to pay its bills. It must repay four loans totaling 1.6 billion euros to the International Monetary Fund next month, starting with a 300 million euro payment on June 5 that is seen as the next crunch point for state coffers.

Athens has the money to make monthly wage and pension payments this week, government spokesman Gabriel Sakellaridis told a news conference. But he was less direct when asked about the June 5 payment, reiterating the government's official stance that it has the responsibility to pay all its obligations......Reuters.......todayonline.com
