US Navy Stops Accompanying Merchant Ships Through Strait Of Hormuz

US warships have stopped accompanying commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, a Pentagon spokesman said Wednesday.

The move comes after the US Department of Defense announced that US warships would escort US and UK commercial vessels passing through the strait following Iran's seizure of Marshall Islands-flagged Maersk Tigris cargo ship, while it was navigating in the Strait of Hormuz on April 28.

"The mission has changed from 'accompany' to maritime security operations," Col. Steve Warren told reporters.

According to Warren, US Navy stopped its mission since its mandate elapsed on Tuesday, adding that it would still carry out daily maritime patrolling in the strategic strait.

Maersk Tigris was reportedly seized at the request of Iran's Ports and Maritime Organization due to financial disputes with the owner of the ship.

The ship is currently anchored near the Iranian shore.

Tehran claims that the seizure of the ship was made in compliance with a court order, and declines any political reasons behind the move.

  1. Maersk Tigris cargo ship receives permission to leave Iran’s port — media...

The Maersk Tigris cargo ship has received permission to leave the Iranian port of Bandar Abbas, IRNA news agency said on Thursday.

"An informed source in the Organization of Ports and Navigation of Iran said several minutes ago that the Maersk ship has been released today," IRNA said.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry said earlier that the Marshall Islands-flagged ship seized by Iran "will be released after a financial dispute is settled between the ship’s owner and Iranian company Pars Oil Tala'eyeh Products."

On April 28, Iran seized the Maersk Tigris cargo ship belonging to Denmark-based Maersk Line Shipping company in the Hormuz Strait. The ship stayed in Iran’s port of Bandar Abbas in the Persian Gulf after a legal complaint was filed by Iran’s Pars Oil Tala'eyeh Products company against Maersk Line Shipping, demanding a $10 million compensation.

  2. Maersk Tigris: Iran 'releases' seized cargo ship...

ran has released a container ship it seized in the Strait of Hormuz last week, state media report.

A source at Iran's Ports and Maritime Organisation was quoted by the official Iran news agency as saying that the Maersk Tigris "was free to leave".

But the ship's operator Rickmers Shipmanagement said it had received "no official word on the ship's release".

The Marshall Islands-flagged vessel and its crew of 24 were intercepted by Iranian patrol boats on the 28 April.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammed Javad Zarif said last week that it had been detained because of a long-running legal dispute.

The Danish shipping company Maersk, which charters the vessel, had been ordered by an Iranian court to pay damages to a private firm, he explained....bbc.com
