Parliamentary elections in the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic are set to take place in September, say separatists
DONETSK, Ukraine- Parliamentary elections in the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic in Ukraine are set to take place in September, separatists have announced.
"We are actively preparing for the parliamentary elections that will take place September 14," said Denis Pushilin of the self-styled government during a meeting held in Lenin Square in Donetsk on Sunday.
Pushilin said the polls would be based on majority rule.
Nearly a thousand people gathered in the square, chanting pro-separation slogans and waving flags of Russia and the so-called Donetsk People’s Republic, an Anadolu Agency correspondent reports from the scene.
The region of Donetsk has declared independence from Ukraine after holding a "self-rule" referendum on May 11 organized by pro-Russian separatists. The Ukrainian government and Western nations have refused to recognize the referendum results.
